Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve could host a legendary movie with an array of scenery.
This epic 360 degree views of mountains, a creek, and some 750 foot sand dunes awestruck us.
The Visitor Center’s elevation begins at 8,160 feet because of the high plains in the area (apparently the size of the state of Connecticut according to a National Park Ranger).
On May 6th, the weather was ideal and we had an enjoyable family day. The temperature was 70 degrees, and I wouldn’t want to be there in summer because the sand under our feet was hot! Beware, the wind blowing the sand from the prevailing winds and then also from the opposite direction over the mountains ridges was abrasive.
At the Oasis Store located 4 miles from the park entrance, we rented sand sleds and boards to ride down the dunes-worth it! All of us tried both sand boarding and sledding.
Otherworldly. These pictures don’t capture the contrast between substantial desert-like sand dunes next to snow-capped mountains and a creek. Other mountains surrounding us were green. We all delighted in the spectacular scenery, playing on the dunes and cooling off in the gentle water.
Alamosa Journey KOA kindly accommodated our 2 night stay. It was good to be in one place for two nights, albeit the nights were 40 degrees chilly.
And finally, after a few days dirtying clothes and an exhilarating day in the sand, the KOA provided 4 washers and dryers to meet our laundry needs.
